When a smooth igniter needs to be fitted in a thread
The adapter is relevant when the stove is designed for an igniter with thread, but the exact threaded igniter cannot be obtained. A smooth igniter with the correct diameter, length and power can then be fitted using the adapter instead. If the old igniter has a 3/8" thread, the thread measures approx. 16.7 mm in outer diameter.
The adapter's inner diameter must fit the igniter, so a 12.6 mm adapter is used for 12.5 mm igniters. Smooth universal models with that diameter can be found under custom-size igniter, and the other smooth models can be found among steel igniters.
Adapter or holder
A holder and an adapter both secure a smooth igniter, but in different types of stoves. The holder is used in stoves designed for a smooth igniter, while the adapter creates the connection to a stove with a threaded hole. If a smooth igniter sits loosely in a stove without thread, it is therefore an igniter holderthat needs replacing.
With an adapter, the installation determines how far the igniter is inserted, so it requires some care. The ignition tip must be in the same place as on the old igniter, so measure the old one from the hexagon to the tip and position the new one so that it protrudes just as far from the adapter. If the igniter itself also needs to be selected, the full range is under igniter.
